TRIPS IN PORTUGAL

There are varied websites that guide visitors, nationals or not, to new places where they can enjoy local nature and culture.
On this platform, you will find more than 4,100 sights in mainland Portugal, each one with something special.  The information is organized using a common cartographic support (Google Maps), which you can transfer to your mobile phone / tablet;  with it, you will be able to find the best way to get there, and other nearby points of interest!

These sights are distributed over three major regional maps (and within these, organized by sub-regions):

North
Centre
Lisbon & South

Castros' beach. in. S. Paio, Labruge, Vila do Conde
Important note: recently we noticed that almost all the figures connected to each location had disappeared.
We limited the number of pictures and tried to find at least one picture for each site.
With 4100 places, it is possible that this work is not perfect: we apologize for the inconveniences and ask for your feed back.
When times require to change pace, use this site to start visiting that Portugal you have never seen, and that is a safe destination!
We promise you will discover unexpected treasures!

How to use:
Start by selecting the region of your interest.  The map opens in any browser or in Google Maps.
The legend (on the left; you can hide it) is common to all regions.
You can view the whole content, or by sub-region.  In the legend, make sure the options related to your interest are active.
There are areas with a high density of sights;  when you need it, zoom in the map to the scale that suits you.
When you select a sight, the respective information sheet opens.  Click on the photo to see additional images.
Download the map(s) to your phone / tablet.  Before taking off, ensure the content for the areas you are visiting is properly loaded.  That way, you can find your route even without internet connection...

Content
In each regional map, sights are organized by sub-region (NUT3) and typology.  There are 20 types of interest (architecture, geomorphology, history, culture, beaches, etc.).  Each one is represented by a distinct icon;  its color is related to either natural (green, blue, black) or human (yellow, orange, red) features.

 See the legend here

For each sight you will find, among other things:
·    Main type of interest
·    Accurate location
·    Georeferentiation
·    Introduction text
·    Images (photographs, maps)
·    Links to learn more

Many texts were adapted from sources referred in the links.  Others, such as those of geological and geomorphological nature, were created expressly for the site.
The division in regional maps and the list of types of interest were conditioned by Google Maps limitations.
We tried to apply homogeneous criteria and be selective.  For instance, the country’s rich architectural heritage alone contains more than 8,000 classified places; nevertheless all those with National Monument status were included.
There was also a special attention to the exploration of less known areas, too often much less documented than urban regions.
We are especially interested in contributing to the discovery of a deep Portugal so frequently ignored, one that, for this very reason, presents surprise, enrichment, perhaps even some personal dazzle.

When it is not the time for great trips overseas, every so often so risky, there is so much to explore at your doorstep.

An unknown Portugal is calling you!
Take the challenge, and go discover!

This is a personal project, to which a good friend has given immense and selfless support.  Consequently, choices also reflect our necessarily unequal knowledge of the land, and our own paths of discovery.

Time does not stop, so there are no complete or "definitive" lists and maps.
Your comments are essential for us to improve.  And to be able to share more useful information with potential users.
